Message from the Education Director – Pukatawagan Education Authority

Education is the foundation of our future, and at Pukatawagan Education Authority, we are committed to providing a learning environment that reflects and strengthens our Cree identity. Our language, culture, and traditional knowledge are woven into education, ensuring that students have a strong connection to who they are and where they come from. Through on-the-land experiences, the guidance of our Elders, and the dedication of our teachers and staff, we enrich student learning with the wisdom and traditions of our ancestors. As a community, we take great pride in our Cree way of life, and we know that preserving our language and cultural practices is essential for the success of future generations.

We believe that a culturally relevant education gives our students a sense of belonging and the confidence to pursue their dreams. By balancing traditional teachings with academic learning, we equip them with the skills they need to meet the challenges of the future while staying rooted in their identity. Our schools are safe, supportive spaces where students are encouraged to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on Mathias Colomb Cree Nation. Together, with the commitment of our community, we are building a strong, self-sufficient nation—one that honours its past while preparing for a bright and promising future.

PEA History

The Pukatawagan Education Authority has played a vital role in the community’s education since the closure of the local Day School in 1986. Following its closure, schools and classes were operated by community churches to ensure continued learning opportunities for students. In 2012, the Sakastew School was established, providing a dedicated educational facility for the community. The Pukatawagan Education Authority took over its management, overseeing classes from Kindergarten through Grade 12, as well as a mature student program that has been supporting mature student learners since its opening.

The PEA is led by the Education director who reports to the Board of Directors and is overseen by Chief and Council.

An expansion to the school commenced in 2022, with construction completion scheduled for 2024-25. The addition includes a gymnasium, cafeteria and music room to improve the well-being of students and staff.
